We have all heard the saying “you are what you eat”. Thus, it goes without saying that if you eat fatty foods you will be fat, and if you lean foods you will look leaner. That is why I think its important to ask yourself when preparing your meals or doing impulsive eating “why am I eating this”?
Yesterday I told my cycling class that I eat rice cakes with ketchup, mustard, and relish on top and imagine that its hamburger. Of course, they responded with “thats gross” and “you’re crazy”. However, it serves its purpose in that I want the taste of a hamburger and the convenience of a snack, but I don’t want the calories, fat, or carbs of a cheeseburger because my priority is being and looking healthy. Plus, I don’t always want to live with the haunting thoughts of how will this effect my body nor do I want to spend an extra hour or more in the gym trying to burn it off. Yet, if your priority is thoroughly enjoying the food you eat regardless of how much cardio you might have to do to burn it off or how it could effect your cholesterol levels then thats fine.
The same principle applies to healthy food also. I eat fish and vegetables because science reveals and my actual experiences with elders confirm that it keeps you younger looking and feeling longer, which is important me. I also eat sugar free jello because I like sweets but I want to be healthy; so I eat it to maintain a balance. Yet, I could eat more vegetables with beta carotene if preserving my eyesight was a priority for me right now. Or I could eat more fiber if my digestive tract health was a priority for me right now.
Thus, discover reasons aside from the fundamental need to eat as a means of driving your food choices or motivating you to eat. If you have identified overall health or weight loss as your purpose, and you want help or ideas toward that goal go to www.fit2befab.com where you can get a specialized nutrition program/consultation.
